About the role

Merri-bek City Council has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Waste Services collection operator.

Merri-bek City Council’s current kerbside fleet of Side Loaders plays a crucial role in the delivery of one of Council’s most valued essential services. Waste Services not only ensures that our residential and public place waste is effectively managed, protecting the City’s hygiene but also importantly and actively supports best practice waste management, aligned with Council Policy and expectation of the community to maximise reuse and recycling and reducing waste to landfill.

Key aspects of the role include the completion of daily collection rounds promptly, safe operation of waste vehicles, working within a team environment and the ability to work in all weather conditions. The successful candidate is required to have a current Victorian Drivers Licence with a Heavy Rigid Endorsement, and preferably be skilled in the safe and competent operation of a side loading vehicle (not essential, refer below), able to read and understand route maps, complete additional lifts/requests as directed and the ability to carry out duties and responsibilities in a manner which maintains Council's commitment to quality customer service.

Skills and experience require to perform the role

  • Hold a valid driver’s licence with HR endorsement.
  • Experience in driving a side loader waste vehicle preferred.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Experience driving other waste collection vehicles desirable, and Council may elect to provide training to potential applicants with no waste collection experience but have demonstrated experience driving Heavy Vehicles.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and observe all State and National regulations in the safe driving and operation of a heavy vehicle.
  • Ability to read and understand maps.
  • Proactive approach to safety for self, team and the community.
  • Effective communication with team, Team Leader Waste Operations and Coordinator Waste Operations.
